DECIDED TO PUT UP A WATERCOLOR

WHICH MAKES ME WANNA PAINT NOTHING BUT SELF PORTRAITS, UNTIL WE'RE ALL DEAD

As artists, we are constantly fighting a battle of some degree of problem solving, constantly examining and re-examining our own visual intelligence. This labor deserves a time of rest; a time of peaceful picture making, taking a much-needed break from the conceptual toil.

This series was initially intended to be a simple responding to, and even more so, an illustrating of a time before the idea of conceptual artwork was embedded into my practice. I’m re-visiting journal entries from 1997, when I was eight years old. I had intended for this reunion with my childhood to once again strike a natural sort of imagination, as opposed to the unavoidable struggle to resolve subject matter. However, these journal entries aroused much more of my contemplation. As I re-read through these writings, the words came across very aggressively as the unfocussed thoughts of a eight year old boy who had been, dare I say, programmed to think a certain way, and act a certain way, even when writing in a personal, private, journal. The monologues read as tangents of thought that push and pull from what is my own imagination to what is my father and mother’s ideals on being a good Christian. My paintings will portray a brainwashed youth being subverted into the dive back into a realm of the forgotten bliss of childhood.

These works will be on 22 X 30 sheets of paper, which will resemble the paper of my journal. On top of these enlarged sheets of notebook paper will be assembled imagery directly pulled from the entries themselves, and creating a somewhat surrealistic space, with imagery that may or may not have any visibly definite cohesion. This act will result in many possibilities for my viewer to create their own connection to the images and their time of youth, as well as the reconsideration of my own childhood.

1) ME!

I like to play basketball. I like to draw. I like to run. One of my friends is nuts. One is really palite. I like to go swimming. I like rabbits. I hait snakes because their so slick. I lift his name in the highest. I like Christmas. Christ is Lord. I like to eat. I like the outside. I like to wach movies. Some times I'm sleepy. I like to write story's.

2) The Weard CLOCK

There once was a clock That never stoped tick-ing. It was over a fire place. The fire made the clock. Some people say that theres a ghost in the clock. At midnight the fire goes out. Even if you tryed to burn it, It would kill you. fire drops out every where. Only if someone would kill it. But wait there is a boy who has a knife of magic. The boy could here something from the clock. He killed it for no reason.

3)My Grand Parents.

My Grandparents are kind and sweet. They are Christians. They go to church and lift his name in the highest. They live on a farm. They have horses, cows and two dogs. I like to go fishing with my grandpa. My Grandpa is in the hospital. He's having surgery on his heart. He's doing better now. I really want to see him.I bet he wants to see me too. He might evan be dieing to see me!!!! My Grandma is soft and calm. She loves me too. I love them both. Well their names are Sure and bill.

4)The under water club

There once lived 3 boys. They always went down to river.In the river was a club. Not just a club it holds bodi's of children. Every time they went they met a different ghost. The ghost arn't harmfull. They are very sly. They slither and slither every were as they see things something is always waching over them. The boys are 8,9,and 11. THey love girls. There into haunted houses. They and the ghost have scelatan freinds. There club is a scole head. finally it vanished.

5) The Toukan and the man

There once was a toucan. He always went to a old mans house. The old man always said "T,T,Toucan." The toucan went around his his head whene he said that. The toucan could do tricks like jugle, duble flip, laps and swim! The old man always wonderd why he was weard sometimes? The man felt like there was an angel there. HE loved the lord in the highest and his toukan. And so did the toucan.

polar bears on glass

this piece has been the most unique work of art i have produced in a long long while. This painting has no paint on the surface of the glass but only behind the glass. To accomplish the rendering of the two polar bears correctly, I just edited the image i was working from by reversing the picture. A covered the glass with white paint and used a fork, knife, and old fine liner for all of the mark making involved.

I am also very aware that this is an awful photograph of the piece although I am proud of this painting, it is only a small step towards something almost noteworthy. The frame itself is a negative to me, it was a gift from my friend Judith but it almost reminds me way too much of the "riceboy sleeps" artwork. Check it out though, great tunes and wonderful drawings and paintings.

the painting on the left is a somewhat recent painting, an ode to all of the 'black paintings' done over the years(the square to its left is just the concept) i want to take what these artists have done and put an emphasis on the morbid appeal of an all black painting.

*note that i took this photograph of the painting with a flash to emphasize the materials used, although when i look at the painting on my wall all I see is black; what you are seeing is the 'inside scoop'.
